In this setting of the beautiful poem, Back Lot by
Lia Purpura, I tried to represent the melancholy
and the nostalgic words of the narrator with
music of a similar tone. As the poem
progresses it grows slightly more hopeful, as
does the music. However, the end of the poem
seems to return to the reflection and longing of
the opening and the music attempts to parallel
this narrative of the text. Back Lot was
composed for the 2009 Warren Benson Forum
on Creativity at the Eastman School of Music.
