Her’s Was a Beautiful Soul is a work scored for
marimba and flute that was inspired by the
tragic death of a young girl who was killed by
stray gunfire near her home in Colorado. The
piece attempts to combine motives of peace
and violence in various ways, using ideas of
interruption, clash, and complementation. Much
of the work’s harmonic material is generated
from the opening marimba chord, a sonority
built from two interlocking perfect fifths.
Throughout the beginning of the work, the
marimba develops this harmony and modulates
the sonority through the entire circle of fifths.
The flute presents a slow rising motive, again
based on the initial marimba chord. This rather
peaceful music is interrupted repeatedly with
fragments of a more violent motive, which
eventually takes over the middle part of the
piece. However, the two elements are
juxtaposed thereafter and the music returns to
the opening chorale later in the work.
