Statues to the Sky was commissioned in 2010 for Timothy Shade and the Bethel College Wind Ensemble. It is a piece which honors the American Armed Forces, one of America’s most cherished and respected institutions. Indeed, when I think of the heroism and honor that our military represents, I feel great pride as an American. My brother is an active member of the United States Air Force, and thus the subject is even more personal to me. In the end, I tried to create a fun and exciting piece worthy of a tribute to our military. USA! – SD
