Here is a series of videos I recorded about the composition process for this piece:
Program Note
“For This Brave New Day” was commissioned in 2020 in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the South Shore Conservatory Summer Music Festival. Eric Laprade, director of the Summer Music Festival Wind Ensemble led a consortium made up of ensembles and schools throughout the Boston area and the northeast. As Eric and I discussed possible ideas for the piece, he described a typical day at the summer music festival: early in the morning the grounds are quiet. The sun is still rising, dew is glistening on the grass, and peaceful sounds of nature emerge. Students begin to arrive on campus, and soon music begins to fill the air. By the middle of the day, the festival grounds are alive with music as the day reaches a triumphant arrival.
I was drawn to this concept and thought it would be fun to try to paint this scene through music. Naturally, the music starts very quietly and generally grows louder and more triumphant as the piece goes on.

Grade 4
The music of Outlaws comes from the third movement of my piece Three Scenes from Home, which was inspired by my childhood adventures playing in the woods behind our house.
Grade 4
Based on an original chorale tune and inspired by Grainger’s Irish Tune from County Derry (one of my favorite pieces), this work is a simple yet powerful piece with a soaring melody and rich harmonies.
Grade 4
This lyrical work opens with a flute solo, and then a flute/clarinet duet, introducing the theme that is developed throughout the work.
Grade 4
Three Scenes from Home is comprised of three continuous movements (Bike Ride, Tree House, Outlaws) and is inspired by my childhood adventures playing in the woods behind our house.
Grade 3/4
Available as a collection of three arrangements, or individually: “If Ye Love Me,” “Third Mode Melody,” and “Variations on the Tallis Canon.” Scored for 4/5-part flexible instrumentation that can be adapted for nearly any combination of wind, string, and percussion instruments.
Grade 4
Inspired by the advent chant melody, this new arrangement begins with a contemplative verse and slowly builds to a glorious climax. Scored for 8-part flexible instrumentation plus optional piano and percussion.
Grade 4
Originally written for SATB Choir, this captivating, chorale-like piece showcases the band’s colors and expressive qualities – sure to become a favorite for ensemble and audience member alike!
Grade 3
This arrangement of a patriotic favorite is true to the original with some new and exciting harmonies. Also available for full or chamber orchestra here.
Grade 4
This work, scored for orchestra and narrator, reflects on the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy. The piece blends elements of a funeral march and a lament, and near the end of the piece a moving poem is read over the music by a narrator. (This work is also available for wind band here)
