Meet the Composer:
Virtual Clinics for Your Ensemble

Live, interactive sessions bring a composer into your rehearsal room—from anywhere

Technology makes it easy for us to connect live, regardless of where we are.

I can be sitting in my home studio, answering questions from your students in your rehearsal room!

Whether I’m speaking live to your students via Zoom or recording a 1:1 conversation with you to share later, virtual clinics can enhance and enrich your students’ musical experience. We’ll talk about the piece they’re preparing, the inspiration behind it, and what it’s like to write music for ensembles like yours.

  • "I love that this experience provides so much more [insight and an] opportunity for kids to better understand the piece."

  • “Such a great experience for the kids—they all wanted to stay and talk about it.”

Virtual clinics have become one of my favorite ways to support music education.

I’ve connected with musicians across the country—from high school bands to college ensembles to state honor groups—and every time, I’m encouraged by the insight, curiosity, and creativity these students bring.

These sessions are a great way for musicians to connect with a living composer, hear more about the music they’re performing, and ask questions directly.

Interested in planning an in-person residency?

I can come in for a rehearsal, teach a workshop, do a Q&A session, or work with you to plan a multi-day residency to provide insight, give feedback, and support the musicians as they prepare for performance.

Working with a living composer and hearing about the inspiration behind a piece, the writing process, and why they made certain artistic choices is a meaningful and memorable experience for all involved.

What other directors have asked:

Here are some common questions I get about virtual clinics:

  • All we need is a device with a mic, camera, and Zoom access in your rehearsal space. A laptop, projector, or smart board setup works well—I can help you troubleshoot if needed.

  • Yes, absolutely. I’m happy to hear a run-through and offer feedback on interpretation, balance, or phrasing.

  • Yes. Directors often record our session and play it back for students who can’t attend live.

  • Both! Some directors prefer a composer talk followed by open Q&A, while others prep student questions ahead of time. I can adapt to whatever format works best for your group.

  • Yes! Many ensembles pair a virtual clinic with a new commission. I can help you coordinate a timeline that includes both.
